Session 3b LAB: AI and Student Perspectives - November 19, 2025

Overview

Starting off this session, Phil Burns and Matt Waid from the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSSR) shared guidance on how to handle suspected unauthorized AI use and other forms of academic misconduct, emphasizing that their primary goal is to educate and support students, not to punish them. In summary, they advised three main steps for instructors:

1. Faculty should first talk with the student, using the assignment itself to ask questions about their process and understanding;

2. Make a determination and inform the student

3. Submitting a report through the OSSR website.

Once they have met with OSSR, students have the right to appeal through the Student Hearing Board.

The overall message was clear: OSSR is here to help students learn and uphold academic integrity through education and fairness. Submitting a report DOES NOT mean a student will fail, be suspended, or expelled; rather, it documents the concern and connects students with resources.

After the presentation, attendees broke into small discussion groups to review three scenarios related to AI use and academic integrity. Each group considered how they might approach conversations with students in these situations and then shared their insights with the larger group. The discussions were rich, thoughtful, and enlightening, highlighting the importance of communication, empathy, and consistency in addressing academic integrity in the age of AI.
