Session 1b LAB: AI 101 - September 17, 2025

Overview

The AI 101 Hands-On Lab gave participants the opportunity to explore the landscape of generative AI tools available at UNLV while building practical skills through interactive activities. The session began with an overview of AI platforms that faculty and staff can access, including:

Google Gemini
NotebookLM
Zoom AI Companion
ChatGPT
Khanmigo

From there, the workshop addressed issues of safety, settings, and data privacy, helping participants understand how to navigate these tools responsibly. Attendees then engaged in hands-on prompting activities, directly comparing outputs from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to evaluate tone, depth, style, and accuracy. The facilitators introduced the “4 Cs” framework—Context, Constraints, Cognition, and Control— as a practical guide for selecting the right tool based on instructional needs. A bias exercise encouraged participants to think critically about stereotypes in AI-generated content and their broader cultural implications.

The session concluded by showcasing examples of instructional integrations with AI at UNLV, with participants invited to reflect on how they might experiment with AI in their own teaching and research. A final question was posed for participants to ask their AI, "What is one way I could experiment with AI in my teaching or research this semester?"
